> The far more likely explanation is that your unifi dashboard's device identification logic is broken and is misreporting the device.

that does happen, but if this fridge really is connected, it is far more likely that one samsung device used Bluetooth LE to communicate its wi-fi credentials to another samsung device when they were in extremely close proximity.

This is how a new apple device can get logged into the same apple account as another device, you bring them close to each other and they communicate over BLE everything that is needed to bring the new device online and into your device ecosystem.

samsung probably isn't running a botnet, that's not why the fridge is connected; your guess is as good as mine as to what it is, but i would be surprised if it were a botnet.

> Therapy for normal people is one of the absolute worst things that feminism has done to society.

No, people who think and say things like that are one of the absolute worst things to happen to society.

If you think treating women as human beings is bad, you’re one of the worst things that has happened to society, end of statement.

This is so unbelievably crystal clear to people who think that it isn’t even a topic of discussion anymore.

“Women belong in the kitchen” is colossal ignorance and/or active and intentional desire not to learn in the same sphere as flat earthers, witch hunters, and anti-vaxxers.

Go stand in a corner until you believe that women should be able to do what they want to the exact same degree as men.

> “Women belong in the kitchen”

They never said anything remotely like that in their comment. You're actively lying about their words in addition to badly breaking the HN guidelines. You should re-read them:

Thanks, throwaway account. I’m glad you’re brave enough to name yourself. [whispers: lotta people hiding around here…]

Do you really think that someone who says feminism is bad does not have a very strong idea that women should be subservient?

He didn’t say that, you’re right. Nor did I say that he did.

Reading comprehension is at an all time low among Americans and English speakers in general. I can’t wait to leave this hellscape planet that people like you seem to dominate.

Maybe a bit (a lot) overboard with the marketing snazz on this page.

it's a keyboard

It's not a miracle.

If you're going to have all this 3D imagery, put a glTF model viewer on the page, and let me look at it.

though to be told, I definitely want one. low profile keyboards are indeed my jam. I don't know why the hell keyboards need to have batteries though. No one needs a wireless keyboard. Wires are not that much of a pain in the ass. Coiled, self-retracting keyboard cables are a thing. Keyboards do not need to be wireless. Wires are fine, I promise! Wireless mouse? Sure. Wires make the mouse move when you don't want it to move. Wireless credential entry device? Those should remain wired, I think.

30 years of professional programming and I touch "Home", "End", "PgUp", "PgDn", "Ins", and "Del" every single day.

You can do this using fn button, without moving your hand every time you need to press them.

It's very convenient, when your hand don't move at all and can reach every button.

One of built-in, often used by me hotkey is Ctrl-Shift-Alt-Insert (open a new temporary scratch file). It's a default one and I don't want to set up it on every new device. Another one is Alt-Shift-Insert (rectangular selection).

A problem is that it's hard to remap, because everything else I can think of is taken already.

It's also very convenient to not have to remember a bunch of extra combos or perform the gymnastics to press them, especially if you need other modifiers too like shift+pgup, shift+ctrl+pageup, etc

you can do it using any button you like. lots of keyboards are entirely remappable. i don't understand how/why one saying they never touch these buttons is some kind of flex, like it's somehow superior to avoid using some keys or something.

fingerprint sensor is easily done. Touch ID-compatible fingerprint sensor from someone other than Apple is not possible as I understand it.

I just linked you a post with a Touch ID-compatible mechanical keycap.

Reverse-engineered from the Apple Magic Keyboard and requires a donor board, though

You could do all that and maybe after many hours it might work, or you could also solve this in 5 minutes by just plug in the magic keyboard to the computer, stick it in a box with a cut out for the touchid sensor, and just stick your mechanical keyboard on top of the box.

“requires a donor [Apple Magic] keyboard” is not the same as a third party making a Touch ID-compatible sensor. That’s Apple making a Touch ID-compatible sensor and a third party taking it out and putting it in another keyboard.

This does not qualify as a third party Touch ID compatible keyboard.

Yeah, but it’s a third party mechanical keyboard with a Touch ID sensor.

I suppose if one came across a pile of old / broken Magic keyboards, they could extract a bunch of Touch ID sensors and sell those to a keyboard manufacturer (or in their own keyboard). This does not scale, obviously, but including it as an option could work.

yeah there was a snazzy labs ep about this I believe

I never understood this stance. I’ve heard this for 30 years and I still don’t understand why people feel entitled enough to enjoy the benefits of someone else’s work without giving anything back.

Forcing someone to release their code for free isn’t freedom, that’s a lack of freedom. Oh, you want the code to be free. Well guess what? MIT licensed means you can have it. Oh, you want a third party’s changes to be made free. No. Expecting that is batshit insane.

If someone forks this, changes it, and doesn’t release their changes, this still exists. Nothing is lost.

When something is released under MIT, it is “released”. When GPL software is released, it “binds” anyone that works on it, adding requirements to the entity doing the work. I.e. not free.

I'm confused. You begin your post with a stance that's typical of copyleft proponents, then you end it in the opposite direction.

There is a trait in human nature that pushes us to share our knowledge. But we would like this sharing to be mutual.

When I publish a piece of software for free, I would like others to read it, comment it, give me suggestions on how to make it better, and the whole community can benefit from the process.

Unfortunately, someone might instead take it, start making profit out of it, and never giving anything back to me or the community.

As a device to get the former effect and avoid the latter, a sort of "contract" was created that mimicks a copyright licence. It is called copyleft and says that you can do whatever you want with my work except profit.

Now, someone might say that stopping a third party from profiting out of something they have not made is correct, someone might say it nevertheless means removing a freedom from them.

Whose side are you on?

>Unfortunately, someone might instead take it, start making profit out of it, and never giving anything back to me or the community.

>you can do whatever you want with my work except profit.

GPL doesn't prohibit that.

https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/selling.html

> If a license does not permit users to make copies and sell them, it is a nonfree license.

Technically true.

Practically, to make a substantial profit, what you sell must be more worthy than something you can also download for free. So you must sell an enhanced version of the original software. And that is what the GPL wants you to give back and not keep for yourself.

I sell free software of others as an appliance, as a hardware device. Nobody of original authors complained so far, quite the contrary.

I don't get it when the software author choses the license they don't see suitable in full, only because it's one of a common FOSS licenses, and than wiggle around it. There's nothing wrong with making open-source with exception, or dual licenses, or non-free software.

we all would like people to share their code with us, but forcing them to because of your license is extremely anti-freedom to me.

address this culturally, that is the only way to address this completely. legal means cannot fundamentally redirect the culture of a society and make them believe that sharing is better for everyone. if you want a society that shares what it creates, then help create THAT. forcing people to do it pushes them in the opposite direction, they want to grasp their things even tighter than before.

Absolutely. That's how coding used to work in the 70s. Then software passed from people to companies, which proved alien to the cultural values that had hold so far. At the end of the 80s Stallman designed something to address the corporate world with a language they would understand. They had copyright, he created copyleft.

Now, please reread your post replacing "people" with "corporations" and check if it still sounds reasonable.

“we all would like corporations to share their products with us, but forcing us to pay because of their proprietary license is extremely anti-freedom to me”

No one is forcing you to do anything, and least of all which software licenses to depend on. If you don’t like something, choose something else. Freedom, you know?

Nobody forces to release YOUR code for free, you can keep it at home, OR you can buy a commercial license for MY code.

Free for who

Nothing else on any market called “shitty” that I’ve ever seen, and if I had, I would avoid it.

Any sales or marketing person will gladly tell you how bad an idea it is to use this name. “Shitty” is slang for “terrible quality”, for one.

How much of it was written by AI?

If we are talking about the process of direct code production according to a given specification, then 100%.

Lmao "professional"

Every time I hear someone say “the private sector will self-govern” or anything of the kind, I think of any one of the probably tens of thousands of examples of this that history knows about.

If there is any one thing that capitalism can not and will not ever do, is reward a self-governing company in any way. Add human nature in the mix and you get vindictive human scum like these people. Or any one of tens of thousands of other people (100s of millions, really) who would gladly crush another human without ever even feeling bad about it, never mind having the wherewithal to stop and think “hey this may not be a great idea”.

A human without power is a danger to others. Add this to the mountain of evidence proving it.

Can you explain why you think so? Seems like a very childish name to me.

Like a neighborhood kid outside on his bike yelling “shit” then pedaling away as fast as he can, to dissociate himself from the event out of fear of getting caught.

FaTTY - Fast Terminal (executable named “ft”)

RaTTY - Rapid Terminal (“rt”)

LighTTY - Lightspeed Terminal (“lt”)

Dragster (“dt”)

McQueen (“mt”)

Names are hard, but it’s trivial to come up with a name better than “shitty”.

I disagree that FaTTY is better than shitty. And I concur with the original commenter; an awesome name fit for the terminal proliferation age.

I am certain the name was chosen purposefully because damn is it funny.

if you think "shitty" is a funny name then there is nothing anyone can ever do to convince you otherwise. you are so far out of reach that only maturing can cure this.

if you are over 30, you are out of reach to anyone and everyone.
