have one coworker whose clearly lost some ability to think critically because of their overreliance, near obsession, with llm chats. slightly worried they might lose their job
another coworker seems to be early on a similar path but has made some comments about the former coworkers ability that makes me hopeful they dont end up the same way
feels like im talking about old high school friends on a drug path or something. its only anecdotes and i imagine the "perceived damage" is reversible. point is: i think youre onto something about the net effect and were going to have popular definitions for the negative encounters were anecdotally sharing
im a "user" but make Claude interact in an educational format and require sources on assertions. looking back, ive unintentionally cast it as The Librarian from Snow Crash, except if Hiro challenged it frequently. must have been natural after reading Snow Crash a few times. maybe im kidding myself but it feels like i havent lost a step. if im not deluding myself then i could see a world where elementary schools teach responsible llm use of to preserve cognition the same way we had to learn Google boolean search
youre comment is getting to the real economic future: nursing unions will not sit back and let this happen. if the "productivity fantasies" (well said) are real this will get ugly. the competent nurses where i live are in strong unions
its been decades since visiting Austria but when i visited Freiburg 5 years ago it seemed like there were only birds where people were feeding them and our walks in the black forest were noticeably quiet because we heard NO bugs. the lack of buzzing was eerie. im from northwest US
seen Germany's insect decline written about but didnt expect it to be noticeable
im like you where i become so caught up in the image in my head that i lose track of my surroundings
when engaging in small talk i make eye contact and have been told im very easy to talk to
when discussing something im interested in, i stare into the distance and start waving my hands around gesturing at the diagrams im describing. its to the degree where my managers prefer i not meet with one specific customer who commented on this
at my first job my coworkers pointed out that i stare directly up to the ceiling for a period of time, then will type furiously, and repeat. id never known that was different before. assumed everyone constructed their ideas mentally before getting it down on paper
im reminded of my high school AP physics teacher who would close her eyes while lecturing because i assume she was picturing things. the funniest students knew how to get some physical comedy into those windows of obliviousness
when it comes to aphantasia it reminds me of Stan in South Park: "I get it now! I don't get it!" the best i can do be nice and accommodating and acknowledge i simply cant relate
i was humbled by peers smarter than me fairly early so i havent seen myself as the smart one since i was 13
now ive discovered i have a social issue where i assume everyone is on the same page and assume that if i spell out a logical conclusion than i would be patronizing a person who i assume would find my remark obvious and pedantic. its only in the past few months my therapist pointed out im still in the 9xth percentile or whatever based on standardized testing and education and most people are nonplussed by my expectations
in very simple, rude terms, im now treating others much more helpfully. but internally i feel like im treating adults like theyre children which feels gross and bad. people receive me MUCH better now so it seems to have solved my social issue, but now im noticeably a bit more depressed at the state of the world
its not magic its just some nature and nurture. i like wfh bc most of my relationships growing up were distracting troublemakers and slackers. when i had time to myself i noticed i actually accomplished things and then when i worked with others i ended up doing their work too
other people grew up with healthy, cooperative relationships
> But if you’re my colleague and we’re in a Slack discussion and you post a wall of Claude output, then I’m afraid I received a different message than you intended.
i have what ill call a "condition" where i fear assuming someone did something stupid is insulting. i try not to patronize people because i also assume that would be insulting. this leads to issues where sometimes people really want to be lead to water rather than make an implied connection themselves
this is a roundabout way of saying, is there a genuinely polite way to tell colleagues posting ai copypasta makes them seem ignorant? i dont think ai:dr is workplace appropriate. id like to tell people gently and avoid patronizing if possible
"Bikers on Road" sign only object in the middle of the bike lane during a construction project which isnt impacting the bike lane. Portland OR staple. could be cultural? seen Portlands affinity for irony mentioned before
