Super cool. Anyone recommends an oscilloscope for this day and age? I loved the Tektronix ones, but haven’t touched one in 16 years. I think it would be nice to have one to look into these kinds of signals - I know they are relatively simple enough to imagine, but this looks like something cool to show to kids.
The USB and handheld ones are great and can be had for less than $100. The Hanteks can be interfaced with open source software which is great since you get a ton of features that normally wouldn't be included in budget models (like wire protocol decoding). As for benchtop models, Siglent and Rigol are going to be the most affordable. There's a way to generate license keys from certain models if you care. Obviously Tektronix and Keysight are top end but are like 10x the price of Siglent/Rigol.
I think that dude lives in a van somewhere in UK so everything is powered through some powerbank in the van. Plus having several different hardwares that all has to occupy less space as possible.
Are you implying that removing the display would therefore be more space and power efficient than the actual 3mm display specifically calibrated to be powered by the built-in battery lmao. OP is just stupidly contrarian.
I believe since he wanted to hide the machine away somewhere in his caravan and connect to it remotely only, also I believe that he didn't make peace with himself aboug Apple devices and thought that having a complete system might mean giving up that mental red-line and breaching his stance.
Also, he states that "he doesn't love laptops", because having peripherals he didn't choose are redundant. I believe that's a somewhat distorted and carried-on trauma with laptops with subpar input devices and screens.
While I respect his choices and understand where he's coming from, in my opinion he has to change some perspectives and throw away some prejudices like he did for his belonging to fit into that caravan.
Emotional minimalism and throwing away expired things from our mindset is very beneficial for us.
Looks great. I remember a company sort of bought it but afaict they didn’t monetize it. I don’t remember the strategy, or why it was acquired, does anyone recall it?
It’s the same company that bought MuseScore, they basically plan on monetizing it through plugins, audio samples, or optional cloud services (like MuseScore)
They must have abandoned such plans (if they had any) when they got some backlash after they added telemetry features and half a dozen forks popped up overnight.
I think they are saying that it’s very easy to say “go do ‘X’ thing” for someone who already knows and experiences ‘X’. Not terribly helpful for people who don’t know how to do that.
It’s like telling a depressed person to just “not be depressed” and expect that to be helpful. Don’t you think if the depressed person had that lever they would pull it? They don’t know HOW to not be depressed. Ergo, stuck in the cave.
TFA is saying that what you think you may be doing is likely something else. Not publishing your work, not challenging yourself in the arena, etc. isn’t really about trying to make yourself good enough to succeed, it’s an avoidance of the bad feelings when you expect to fail.
So the message is rather simple, just go out and challenge yourself. Again, easy to do if you know how to mentally and emotionally handle the bad feelings. Seemingly insurmountable if you think the bad feelings will destroy you.
Ironically, the only way to know if they will or not is to actually dive in and experience the thing you’re afraid of failing at.
I really dislike using Powershell as a shell, but it looks like on Windows specifically it also has some gui thing that is somewhat similar to a .NET like zenity.
It removes the fun of figuring things out by yourself and the learning how to learn things. Also the lower complexity these systems usually have vs what we use today.
I don’t see the appeal either, but perhaps the person using takes something else from their retrocomputing use.
Yes, I understand, as perhaps someone who has a museum and has to keep things working with very little resources, and I imagine there are many more reasons. Different people may have the same hobbies on the surface for different reasons and so on.
